Grass must be keep shorter than 12 inches high. Additionally, property owners are expected to keep their shrubs and ornamental vegetation trimmed. Overgrowth of both grass and shrubs serves to increase the chance of unwanted wild life and insect growth. Should a property owner be non-responsive when advised of a violation in terms of their yard maintenance, the Town can take measures to remedy the violation and either bill the property owner directly or if the cost is more than $200.00 pursue court action to place a lein against the property/property owner.
Other materials including debris from additions, renovations, as well as items such as but not limited to unused auto parts, tires, batteries, unused appliances and the like should be removed and disposed of by the property owner within reasonable time lines. Failure to remove these items within reasonable time lines can result in: fines; having the items being removed by the Town and the property owner billed for the removal; or having the Town seek court action against the property owner to have them court ordered to remove the debris; and or have the Town pursue a lein against their property to recover the costs associated with the Town removing the debris if the cost exceeds $200.00
Accomack County and the Town of Keller maintain ordinances/regulations which require all dogs to either be on a leash or under the owner’s control when they are outside of the home. Being a respectful town resident carries with it the responsibility to ensure your pet does not leave unwanted waste on the lawn of others not provide to be a nuisance by running after others as they happen by your property.
Within the Town of Keller, property owners are prohibited from housing or maintaining chickens/fowl or other farm animals such as horses, cows, quineas, pigs, goats, and similar livestock. Given the residential nature of the town and the close proximity of the houses, the noise as well as the waste associated with keeping such livestock/farm animals is not conducive to a typical residential neighborhood. Additionally, the maintenance of such animals often results in the introduction of vermin, rodents, and other wild life that are not welcome in residential areas as well.
Town ordinances prohibit the accumulation of unlicensed vehicles within the town. Vehicles which are not licensed and not in working order provide shelter for unwanted vermin to hide and live. This combined with the typical overgrowth of weeds and grass which accompany such vehicles serves to negatively impact the residential environment. Residents are expected to remove unlicensed vehicles/inoperable vehicles in order not to have the Town pursue their removal through court action and or fines based upon violation of the ordinances.
Copies of all Town ordinances are available at the Town Hall. Here are frequently referenced town documents:
